Blackeye Bean Production in California

Blackeye bean, Vigna unguiculata, is the main type of cowpea grown in California. Originally from Africa, these beans are also known as black-eyed peas in the southern United States. 

The primary markets for California-grown, high-quality blackeyes include the dry-packaged and canning industries, with a smaller market for certified planting seed stock. 

Tables clearly illustrate key areas of cultivation concern including Boron and salinity sensitivity of varieties; fusarium, nematode, and cowpea aphid resistance; and fertilization needs. In addition to the cowpea aphid, pest management covers lygus bug, armyworm, and spider mites, with an emphasis on IPM approaches.
